1. “सोचो माँ को मेरा घर में होना ही बुरा लगता था। पिताजी को मेरे संगीत सीखने से चिढ़ थी। वे कहा करते थे कि मेरा घर–घर है रंडियाखाना नहीं। भाइयों का जो थोड़ा–बहुत प्यार था, वह भी भाभियों के आने के बाद छिन गया। मैंने आज तक कितनी–कितनी मुश्किल से अपनी आ… आ… पवित्रता को बचाया है, यह मैं ही जानती हूँ। तुम सोच सकते हो कि एक अकेली लड़की के लिए यह कितना मुश्किल होता है। मेरा लाहौर की तरफ घूमने जाने का मन था वहाँ की कुछ तस्वीरें बनाना चाहती थी, मगर मैं वहाँ नहीं गई, क्योंकि मैं जानती थी कि मर्द की पशु–शक्ति के सामने आ… आ… मैं अकेली क्या कर सकती। फिर, तुम्हें पता है कि डिपार्टमेंट वाले लोग मेरे बारे में वहाँ कैसी बुरी–बुरी बातें किया करते थे। इसलिए मैं कहती हूँ कि मुझे वहाँ के एक–एक आदमी से नफरत है।”

2. “दुर्बल ही क्यों, वह क्या किसी को चाह सकेगी, उस अनुभूति के संग, जो अब नहीं रही, जो छाया–सी उस पर मँडराती रहती है, न स्वयं मिटती है, न उसे मुक्ति दे पाती है। उसे लगा, जैसे बादलों का झुरमुट फिर उसके मस्तिष्क पर धीरे–धीरे छाने लगा है, उसकी टाँगें फिर निर्जीव, शिथिल–सी हो गयी हैं।”

3. “मुंशी जी के निबटने के पश्चात् सिद्धेश्वरी उनकी जूठी थाली लेकर चौके की जमीन पर बैठ गई। बटलोई की दाल को कटोरे में उँडेल दिया, पर वह पूरा भरा नहीं। छिपली में थोड़ी–सी चने की तरकारी बची थी, उसे पास खींच लिया। रोटियों की थाली को भी उसने पास खींच लिया। उसमें केवल एक रोटी बची थी। मोटी भद्दी और जली उस रोटी को वह जूठी थाली में रखने जा रही थी कि अचानक उसका ध्यान ओसारे में सोए प्रमोद की ओर आकर्षित हो गया। उसने लड़के को कुछ देर तक एकटक देखा, फिर रोटी को दो बराबर टुकड़ों में विभाजित कर दिया। एक टुकड़े को तो अलग रख दिया और दूसरे टुकड़े को अपनी जूठी थाली में रख लिया। तत्पश्चात् एक लोटा पानी लेकर खाने बैठ गई। उसने पहला ग्रास मुँह में रखा और तब न मालूम कहाँ से उसकी आँखों से टप–टप आँसू चूने लगे।”
